World Wetland Day 2007
 

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation together with WWF Nepal, IUCN Nepal, National Trust for Nature Conservation, ICIMOD and other stakeholders celebrated the 11th World Wetland Day 2007. The theme of the wetland day was "Fish for Tomorrow". The day was also celebrated in the different National Parks and Wildlife Reserves of the country with various awareness activities. Seminar/workshop on the wetland, art competition on wetland among different college/school students, clean up campaign, bird watching and mountain biking in Taudaha were organized. On this occasion, the importance of wetland conservation was aired from different radio program like Bhu Paridhi, Kalika FM, Regional Radio Nepal Surkhet, Kathmandu FM, Sagarmatha FM, Batabaran Chakra FM and Foot Print FM.

The national inaugural program was held on 2nd February 2007 at Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu. The program was chaired by Acting Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Mr Shyam Bajimaya. The program was inaugurated by the chief guest the Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation Dr Uday Raj Sharma. Mr. Jhamak Karki, Assistant Ecologist of DNPWC gave a welcome speech to the participants. Acting Director General Mr Bajimaya highlighted the objectives and importance of wetland conservation and its importance for human beings.

On that occasion, chief guest of the program Secretary Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation Dr Sharma noted that Nepal have played significant roles in conservation programs. He was of the view that the Government and partner organizations, however, have to take more actions for the conservation and wise use of the wetland resources. Dr Madhav Karki, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD, Dr Prabhu Budathoki, Country Representative of IUCN Nepal, Dr Siddhartha Bajracharya, Member Secretary of National Trust for Nature Conservation, Mr Anil Manandhar, Country Representative of WWF Nepal and Mr Subash Niraula, Director of Nepal Tourism Board also expressed their views in the program. At the end of the program, Mr Tika Ram Adhikari, Planning Officer of DNPWC thanked all the participants and partner organizations for organizing different events and their contribution.

 
12th Wildlife Week 2007
 

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) and the protected areas under it celebrated the 12th Wildlife Week 2007 with various activities that were aimed at raising public awareness on wildlife conservation. First week of the first month each year (Baisakh 1-7) is being celebrated as a wildlife week since 2053. On the occasion, International Tiger Symposium (ITS) and fourth General Assembly of Global Tiger Forum were organized between 16th to 20th April, 2007 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Speech competition, wildlife games, quiz contest and poem and essay competition was organized for school children from various schools of Kathmandu valley.
To conclude the week, DNPWC organized a program on June 15, 2007 at DNPWC complex Babarmahal, Kathmandu. Mr. Shesh Hari Bhattarai, Director General of the DNPWC chaired the program. This was inaugurated by Dr. Uday Raj Sharma, Chief of Planning Division of Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC). High level officials of MFSC, Director Generals, representatives of partner organizations, teachers and students of various schools and nature lovers participated the program. Mr. Gopal Prakash Bhattarai, Management Officer of DNPWC welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance and objectives of wildlife week.

Dr. Uday Raj Sharma released the special bulletin of 12th wildlife week "Biodiversity Conservation Efforts in Nepal", "Danphe" and "Bagaicha, Bankunja ra Upabanka Charaharu". Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sharma stated that the ecological health assessment could be done by specifying indicator with participation of local school, CBOs and NGOs.  Mr. Shesh Hari Bhattarai, Director General of DNPWC gave emphasis on conservation awareness program and highlighted the role of school teachers and students in awareness raising programs. The chief guest of the program distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of the various competitions organized on the occasion of 12th wildlife week. Mr. Laxmi Prasad Manadhar, Conservation Education Officer of DNPWC extended vote of thanks to all institutions and individuals directly or indirectly involved in celebrating wildlife week, 2007.
